Dazzling paintings adorn the ceiling of Suceava synagogue
Once home to 12 synagogues (and probably several more smaller prayer houses), today Suceava has just one. It is, however, in excellent condition and the interior paintings appear especially well maintained. The ceiling, resplendent in bright blues, browns, and greens, is covered with Biblical and Zodiac symbols - common motifs for the synagogues of eastern Europe. According to the current community president, it was repainted in 1980 according to the original images.
Another beautiful painted synagogue ceiling in the news right now is the recently unveiled reconstruction, intended to be a centerpiece in Warsaw’s new Jewish Museum. Read more about the museum’s history, creators, and ambitious goals here and here.
