Regulations regarding Purim festivities, Suceava police, 1924
There are many hundreds of files from the police and town hall collections in Suceava. This note, announcing regulations pertaining to the wearing of masks for Purim parties, was stumbled upon by happenstance as we reviewed one of these files at random.
The regulation requires that each individual intending to wear a mask in a public space hold a permit from the police. Secondly, masks that could “offend anyone or scandalize the public,” are forbidden. The above offenses were punishable by a fine of up to 200 lei and the confiscation of the masks.
Unfortunately, no confiscated masks were found in the files, but we certainly are curious to see one which would have “scandalized the public.” Since rules are most often created to address an existing problem rather than prevent an imaginary one, it is safe to assume that in years past someone felt offended or scandalized by the Purim revelers and their costumes - if only there were some photos of this!
